Position: Lab Technician

Pay Grade: Non-exempt 7

Shift: 2nd shift

I. POSITION SUMMARY

A. Performs laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics or composition of materials for purposes such as: quality control, process control or product development.


II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (The section is not intended to be an all-inclusive list and NGK Ceramics reserves the right to include other duties as assigned):

A. Operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as: microscopes, dilatometers, chemical balance scales, high temperature furnaces, optical measurement systems, and particle size analyzers.

B. Tests materials that are used in Honeyceram manufacturing in order to determine the following: moisture content, WAB, ESP, ISO, BSP, Barcode readability, particle size, sieve residue and other physical characteristics.

C. Tests samples of manufactured Honeyceram to verify conformity to customer specifications

D. Records test results on various standardized forms and enters data into the company's information systems

E. Cleans laboratory equipment

F. Prepares chemical solutions for tests

G. Works safely by avoiding forklifts; staying clear of forklift doors; and using personnel doors when entering or exiting the buildings

H. Participates in G5S (Global 5S: Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) activities, PM (Preventive Maintenance) and MMOL (Machine Maintenance Operator Leader) activities, as needed

I. Follows all EMS (Environmental Management System) procedures, including the disposal of waste and used materials

J. This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

IV. REQUIRED AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

A. Required Education and/or Experience

1. Must be able to successfully complete all required job training

2. High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

3. CRC Silver or higher

B. Preferred Experience

1. A background in laboratory testing is desired.

C. Required Language Skills

1. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

2. Ability to complete various forms and documents and write legibly.

D. Required Mathematical Skills

1. Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers and decimals.

E. Required Reasoning Ability

1. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
2. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

F. Required Computer Skills

1. Intermediate skill level with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

G. Additional Required Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to read gauges and scales.


V. PHYSICAL DEMANDS (The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. A. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to handle and feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear.

C. Manual dexterity is required for handling of sensitive lab equipment.

D. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

E. The employee is required to have 20/20 near point vision and 20/40 far point vision (natural or corrected vision). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.


VI. WORK ENVIRONMENT

A. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration.

B. The employee is regularly exposed to heat.

C. The employee is occasionally exposed to the risks of radiation; and fumes or airborne particles.

D. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.


VII. SAFETY REQUIREMENTS/PPE

A. Safety glasses, safety glasses with side shields, hearing protection, goggles and/or full face shield are required while performing certain job duties.

B. Task appropriate gloves or mitts (e.g. latex gloves, cloth gloves, or heat resistance gloves) are required while performing certain job duties.

C. Respirators may be required while performing certain job duties.

D. Heat resistance, protective or safety aprons are required while performing certain job duties.

E. Regularly scheduled vision testing is performed.

F. Safety shoes must be worn while on NGK property.
