The Mechanical Department Leader position requires the ability to support the firm's Business Development Principals as well as being the primary mechanical technical representative for the firm in the pursuing, proposing and securing consulting services that support manufacturing and industrial clients. The position will require the assistance and/or taking the lead in preparing professional proposals for mechanical consulting services for potential projects. The strong ability to concisely convey technical issues and related service offerings to clients, in a manner that secures their confidence, is a must.

The Mechanical Department Leader also provides management, oversight, planning, and mentoring, among other duties, to the mechanical department to support the execution of multiple projects within the department. The ability to develop staffing and project execution plans for large manufacturing and industrial projects, that will then be turned over to lead mechanical engineers for ultimate project execution, is a must. The position will have discipline group leaders (DGLs) reporting to them that will assist in managing the overall mechanical department but the ultimate responsibility for the mechanical department is the department leader.

This position is open to Nashville, Knoxville, Charlotte, Detroit or the Buford, GA office.

As the Department Leader, the successful candidate should be able to:

  • Plan and manage project mechanical staffing assignments, accountable for staff utilization, profitability of mechanical discipline budgets for projects, technical content, quality, and schedule conformance for all projects.
  • Assist Market Vice President (MVP) in setting department-wide technical goals, and establish technical training program for department.
  • Recruit, develop, manage, and mentor mechanical staff, including compensation review, and regular review of goals and development progress.
  • Maintain and retain existing clients through relationships built on project assignments.
  • Assist with preparation of project proposals, marketing presentations, and other business development functions.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with project managers, and coordinate with project managers to verify compliance of staff in achieving project goals, including scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Develop and implement mechanical department standards for efficient execution of projects.
  • Regularly interact with and support the Market Technical Practice Leader (TPL) with the planning and advancement of initiatives to improve technical efficiencies and workflows within the Market.
  • Work with market leadership in the development of the annual business plan which includes establishing training programs and budgets for mechanical staff, input into the strengths and gaps of the practice and input into DEIB and other areas for further development of people and culture, clients, practice and operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Prefer a minimum of 15+ years' experience in Mechanical engineering systems design with a consulting firm for Industrial/Manufacturing/Process projects.
  • Professional Engineer license, P.E., required.
  • Previous operations management experience of a staff of engineering/design professionals is required
  • LEED accreditation is preferred.
  • Must have general knowledge of BIM (Revit) and CADD.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of national and state codes and their application to each assignment. Must be able to edit master Mechanical specifications and write new specifications for assignments as required.
  • Experience working with outside subconsultants and contract staff is preferred.
  • Must have effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage and coordinate staff across multiple locations.
