Job Description

Scope of Role

The Accountant III is responsible for finance and accounting information for the Boston Gear, Bauer U.S. and Micron Gearhead business lines, including but not restricted to preparation of financial information for the Charlotte, NC manufacturing operations.

The position is hands-on and highly interactive with operations leadership as well as Corporate Finance and external audit firms and requires an attitude and emphasis on providing excellent customer service and expertise to the business.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate and oversee monthly and quarterly financial statement preparation, together with, supporting senior cost accountant, for all businesses and/or value streams
  • Prepare certain monthly closing journals, reconciliations, and supplemental data
  • Analyze and provide commentary of drivers behind operating variances and comparison variances
  • Consolidate and review monthly closing documents including standard reporting package and KPI's
  • Provide support for local Operations teams related to monthly KPI tracking, ensuring data accuracy and timeliness
  • Support operations management in any needed ad-hoc financial analysis of (but not limited to) departments, value streams and plant/office/support areas
  • Execute forecast changes in financial reporting system
  • Analyze and complete quarterly, and ad-hoc, Internal & External Audit requests for all Charlotte businesses
  • Provide accurate and timely financial information to both Internal and External Audit Team members, as well as corporate finance department team members and division leadership as requested
  • Lead the local annual budgeting process for all Charlotte based businesses including (cost center & account planning/headcount/file preparation/SAP budget data entry)
  • Determine and analyze annual overhead & labor rates, together with senior cost accountant, to research and determine the drivers behind changes in rates year over year, in addition, assist senior cost accountant with annual cost roll impact analysis
  • Responsible for reviewing and tasking Shared Service functions to support local AP, AR, journal entry, and asset management
  • Manage and evaluate accounts receivable balances by customer to insure favorable DSO trends and bad debt expenses
  • Ensure Capital projects are closed and tracked properly
  • Review and approve any invoices through the automated invoicing system
  • Provide any financial support to information technology team to implement any new systems within the ERP system
  • Manage and obtain approval for all requested capital expenditures and maintain controls on all plant processes within the required and approved project budgets
  • Monitor and approve both hourly and salary payroll registers to ensure accurate pay for employees
  • Perform reporting and analysis of business working capital and help drive projects and focus on improvement opportunities
  • Oversee, with support from senior cost accountant, cycle counting activities and physical inventory control per company standards
  • Monitor all activities and ensure compliance to all corporate standards
  • Determine and maintain all accounting principles and processes and ensure compliance to US GAAP regulations
  • Assist Group Controller as needed

Critical Competencies

  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard accounting activities, such as journal entry preparation and posting, account reconciliations and analysis, preparation and analysis of financial statements, and application of accounting policies
  • General knowledge of cost accounting principles to support variance analysis and profitability analysis
  • Broad, up-to-date knowledge of and ability to research GAAP and related guidance is required
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications, including Excel
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills with a continuous improvement mindset
  • Result-oriented with a demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and multiple priorities.
  • Highly productive with a strong sense of urgency and orientation to details, accuracy, and excellent outcomes
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to adapt to internal processes and change, delays or unexpected events

Willingness to travel 5-10% of the time and be available to work extended hours as needed

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelors degree with Accounting Major/concentration is required. MBA or Masters in Accounting preferred
  • CMA or CPA license is a plus
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting/finance in a manufacturing environment is required
  • Experience with SAP, Hyperion and/or Tagetik is preferred
  • Exposure to lean manufacturing is a plus

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Potential physical demands include but are not limited to: frequent sitting and occasional bending and stooping. Potential sensory demands include but are not limited to: hearing and seeing. Must be able to work in a typical manufacturing facility and travel domestically to customer and/or supplier facilities which could involve walking, climbing and moving around working equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Majority of time is spent in an office environment, with frequent time spent in a manufacturing production environment locally. Personal protective safety equipment must be worn, and proper safety precautions must be observed. Potential exposure may include, but is not limited to: solvents, dusts, paint, noise, heat, cold.
