Job Summary

Selective Insurance is seeking a Vice President, General Liabilities Claims located in our Charolette, NC office. The candidate should possess the ability to lead and develop a sophisticated team of claims professionals handling and managing a wide variety of General Liability claim functions, including the Complex Claim Unit, Litigation, Liability, Excess & Surplus lines general liability and Bonds. Responsible for driving optimum claims outcomes, supporting operational goals and business objectives while delivering superior customer service to our policyholders and agents, all in support of our commitments to our stakeholders.

This is a role for a dynamic Claims leader who thrives in a fast past environment with a focus on managing and developing staff. The ideal candidate will have a strong general liability background with exposure to handling claims nationwide. Additionally, this candidate will be responsible for reporting out department results to senior management and must have a superb analytical and financial background with excellent presentation and communication skills.

Job Responsibilities

  • Plans, controls and coordinates claims activity and workflow within claims unit/department in order to maintain the highest professional customer service and technical standards, and to ensure work is produced in a timely fashion and that all deadlines are met, including ensuring timely and appropriate settlement, and maintaining acceptable closing ratios.
  • Identifies training needs within the various claims units and partners with claims training resources to ensure the development of high quality training and education programs.
  • Prepares operating budget for unit/department and monitors and controls expenses.
  • Recommends claims procedural changes and plans, organizes and implements these changes in accordance with company guidelines. Keeps current on all changes affecting work production.
  • Maintains override capability, authorizes settlements up to designated authority limits, and submits recommendations to designated officials for those claims in excess of authority level.
  • Oversees combined loss ratio and productivity numbers; ensures they comply with company standards.
  • Oversees and controls allocated claims expenses.
  • Provides performance management activities for personnel measured against business objectives and claims activity.
  • Plans reviews and conducts claims reviews and settlement conferences. Meets regularly with underwriting, actuarial, legal, and field offices to discuss general liability trends and observations.
  • Coaches, mentors, and supports continual professional development of staff. Recommends appropriate skill development to ensure optimum contribution of team to achieve company results.

Job Qualifications

  • 10+ years claims experience in the Property & Casualty Industry.
  • 7+ years claims management experience.
  • Multi-jurisdictional understanding of legal issues.
  • Ability to lead a team of complex claims specialists who are technically experienced in severity claims. Strong people and management skills to properly performance manage staff.
  • Ability to analyze reports and trend analysis to identify issues.
  • Experience in complex coverage analysis and significant large loss evaluations, loss allocations.
  • Superior communication, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent presentation skills, customer service, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated financial acumen (budgeting, cost/benefit analysis, ROI, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of claims business processes, procedures and workflows required.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and develop staff.
  • College or legal degree preferred.

The expected starting salary range for this role is$209,000 - $287,000. The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
