Overview

RTI's Center for Water Resources (CWR) is a team of 50 scientists and engineers dedicated to sustainable management of water resources related to water supply, hydropower, and ecosystems. Our team of experts designs client-focused solutions for forecasting rivers and reservoir operations, conducting hydrologic risk assessment for floods and droughts, and developing planning and allocation models of complex water systems - all leading towards improved, data-driven, decisions for water management.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly experienced and knowledgeable Senior Earth Systems Scientist to join RTI International. As a Senior Earth Systems Scientist, you will play a crucial role in advancing RTI's efforts in the climate change sphere through interdisciplinary collaboration and strategic leadership. You will work across disciplines, developing and promoting our business offerings, supporting project implementation, engaging with clients, developing new business opportunities, representing RTI International publicly, and providing guidance to drive the institute's direction in addressing climate-related challenges.


Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take a leadership role in RTI's business development activities regarding Earth and Climate Sciences, managing the development of new strategic business opportunities and expansion of existing business opportunities.
  • Lead the growth and further development of RTI's environmental and climate-related business areas.
  • Lead the development of customer relations in strategic markets and drive project acquisition.
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert and contribute to project implementation by bringing expertise and knowledge in water, energy, agriculture, social, and economic aspects of climate analysis and resilience planning.
  • Engage with clients to understand their climate-related needs and develop tailored solutions to address their challenges.
  • Represent RTI International at conferences, workshops, and other public forums, showcasing our expertise and thought leadership in climate science and resilience planning.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to scientists and researchers across disciplines to ensure high-quality climate science research and analysis.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to foster partnerships and collaborations that enhance RTI International's climate analysis capabilities.
  • Support the leadership team in setting strategic goals and directions for the institute's climate change initiatives.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Ph.D. in Earth Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in climate science research and analysis, with a strong focus on the interdisciplinary aspects of climate change.
  • Proven expertise in remote sensing, water resources, energy supply and demand, agriculture, and knowledge of health impacts related to climate change.
  • Strong existing connections with government agencies most active in the climate and environment arenas (NOAA, NASA, EPA, Army corps of Engineers, Department of the Interior, Department of Energy, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to effectively convey complex climate change topics to diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish in renowned scientific journals and contribute to the advancement of climate change knowledge.
  • Experience in engaging with clients from federal, public, and private sectors, multi-lateral development banks, and international governments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with proficiency in statistical analysis and data visualization.
  • Familiarity with funding sources and evolving programs related to climate change at the U.S. federal government level.
  • Proven track record in business development, including identifying opportunities, developing proposals, and securing funding for climate science initiatives.

Location:

This position can be based at our headquarters in Research Triangle Park, Raleigh/Durham, NC, or at a regional office in Fort Collins, CO, or Washington DC. Full time teleworking is also an option. Some travel may be required to engage with clients and represent RTI International at conferences and meetings.

The anticipated pay range for this role is listed below. Our pay ranges represent national averages and may vary by location as a geographic differential may be applied to some locations within the United States.
