Primary Purpose of Department
Pursuant to NC General Statute Chapter 116, Article 29 A(116-239.5), the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is establishing a university laboratory school with the mission of "improving student performance in local school administrative units with low-performing schools by providing an enhanced education program for student residing in those units and providing exposure and training for teachers and principals to successfully address challenges existing in high need school settings. The laboratory school shall provide an opportunity for research, demonstration, student support, and expansion of the teaching experience and evaluation regarding management, teaching, and learning."

Niner University Elementary School, the lab school for UNC Charlotte, involves an integrated core curriculum for grades K-5 with an emphasis on research-validated practices and social-emotional learning. Niner University Elementary seeks to serve learners "within a community-supported environment that fosters scholarship, engagement, and joy."
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of the Classroom Teacher is to serve as the instructional facilitator to guide and develop the emotional, behavioral, and academic growth of their students. In addition, classroom teachers will work collaboratively with parents, colleagues, administrators, College of Education faculty, and school community members to support the mission of Niner University Elementary in Charlotte, NC
Summary of Position Responsibilities
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials using evidence-based teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse populations and are aligned with the mission/vision of the school.
  • Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests, including students with disabilities and limited English proficiencies.
  • Observe and assess students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health regularly to appropriately meet student needs; provide reports to inform families of student progress.
  • Engages in collaborative data-driven discussions to make informed decisions about teaching and learning for the grade level, class, small groups, and individual students.
  • Provides appropriate instruction for students to meet individual needs.
  • Instructs students individually and in groups during the instructional time, using a variety of teaching methods.
  • Encourages and facilitates the work of other staff members in a collaborative, supportive environment.
  • Establishes and maintains a developmentally appropriate, positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment.
  • Communicates with parents in a timely manner; maintains positive and constructive communication with students, staff, parents, and community.
  • Demonstrates a capacity for cultivating culturally and linguistically inclusive and responsive relationships among students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Designs and implements environmental modifications and management procedures that proactively address student behavioral expectations across all settings.
  • Maintains attendance records as required by the school.
  • Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational
    conferences, and teacher training workshops as required by the position.
  • Follows a plan for professional development and demonstrates
    evidence of growth.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by Administration.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree (or will obtain before start date)
  • Some elementary experience, including student teaching
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Master's degree
  • 2-3 years of elementary, K-5 experience
  • Knowledge of the science of reading
  • Evidence of skill working with at-risk student populations
  • Knowledge of social-emotional learning
Necessary Certifications/Licenses
Hold or be eligible to hold North Carolina Teaching license in Elementary Education (K-6)
