All Counselors must pass a criminal background check, be available for mandatory orientation training on Saturday, June 1, 2024, and must complete mandatory Youth Protection training.

  • New applicants with complete applications (including references) will receive an emailed questionnaire which must be emailed back by the deadline listed in the email. After reviewing questionnaire responses, candidates will be invited to attend our Group Interview evening event in February, March, or April 2024. Selections of new counselors will be made the following week.
  • All Counselors must hold a current valid driver's license
  • Counselors may be required to become UNC Charlotte van certified and responsible for driving an 18-passenger van transporting campers to and from various camp locations and on field trips.

    *Temporary staff employees are ineligible to receive benefits (leave, health coverage, State service credit, etc.). They are, however, covered by Worker's Compensation provisions.

    However, any non-permanent employee hired to work 30 or more hours per week for three months or more (cumulative of all positions, and not designated as variable hour worker), must be offered the chance to enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan, within 30 days of their eligibility. Any non-permanent employee hired to work less than 30 hours per week (cumulative of all positions, or designated as variable hour worker - i.e. student workers) are measured during designated measurement periods. If they average 30 or more hours per week over a designated measurement period, they will be offered the chance to enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan, and will be notified of instructions.

Hours: Monday - Friday, 40 hours/week.

Flex schedule with shift starting at either 7:30am, 7:45am, 8:00am, 8:15am, or 8:30am.

NOTE: Preference for counselors available to work the following weeks: June 10-14, June 17-21; June 24-28; July 8-12; July 15-19; July 22-26; July 29- August 2; August 5-9**priority to applicants available all eight weeks.

Minimum Experience/Education
  • Currently enrolled undergraduate college student
  • 3.0 GPA (high school GPA acceptable for rising freshmen applicants)
  • For new applicants: 3 references from one of the following: 1) Camps on Campus past or present employee 2) UNC Charlotte faculty/staff 3) Teacher or Extracurricular Leader (in case of rising freshmen applicant)
  • Valid driver's license - may be required to pass an online van certification test and a road test.
  • Experience working directly with children/youth, preferably in small and large groups.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
  • Currently enrolled UNC Charlotte student (undergraduate)
  • Former Counselor-in-Training with a strong record of performance
  • Recommendation from a current or former Camps on Campus staff member
Duties and Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Independent, often time-sensitive, decision-making related to camper safety, behavior, and conflict situations.
  • Carrying out individualized learning and behavior plans for campers with disabilities to foster an inclusive camp environment while still upholding the Niner Character Promise expected of each camper.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians on the welfare and disciplinary issues related to campers, which often requires the ability to de-escalate conflict and remain composed and professional.
  • May be asked in urgent situations to substitute for the lead instructor for select camps if the instructor is unavailable.
  • May be asked to contribute curriculum ideas and learning activities, sometimes improvising
  • Learn about and interact with each camper and encourage interaction and socialization among campers
  • Assist in selecting, training, coaching, and supervising Counselors-in-Training, including providing performance feedback.
  • Complete "Youth Protection" training and report any potential cases of abuse immediately to the Program Director. May be asked to write a report and participate in follow-up investigations.
  • Ensure the safety of campers throughout the day; transport campers safely by foot and, when needed, by passenger van to designated locations.
  • Assist with all learning activities in the classroom
  • Keep informed of camper allergies, and medications, and ensure adherence to special instructions
  • Assist with drop-off and pick-up of campers in the morning and afternoon
  • Be prompt, professional, and courteous in all actions and communication with campers, parents, camp staff, UNC Charlotte faculty/staff, and outside partners.
  • Demonstrate accountability and appropriate decision-making; adhere to all legal and safety standards of the camp and of the Minors on Campus university policies.
  • Keep camp administrators and staff informed of issues as they arise

Other Work/Responsibilities
  • Must be physically capable of lifting objects and campers for loading into vans and car seats, dealing with possible injuries, or assisting campers with disabilities.
  • Ability to independently use stairs for safe evacuation during emergencies.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. and working outdoors in the heat during assigned shifts throughout the 8-week period.
