The Product Development Engineer applies scientific and engineering principles for research programs involving product development, processing, manufacturing technology, quality control, and packaging. The position manages projects by maintaining constant communication with cross functional groups to drive projects from concept through commercialization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic research identifying novel delivery forms for confections, dietary supplements, and pharmaceutical active ingredients.
  • Conceptualize and develop new product prototype at bench.
  • Manage project timing, milestones, and resources between Operations, Quality Assurance (QA), Purchasing, and Marketing (project management). Create and adhere to Innovation portion of commercialization timelines and communications between the project team and the organization.
  • Conduct plant trials and product start-ups, managing timing and resources between Operations, QA, Purchasing, and Marketing.
  • Craft and maintain documentation to ensure the consistent manufacture of new products, including batch records, production instructions, validation, and stability protocols. Work with QA to ensure all product documentation is written stored, and approved for commercial manufacture, including material specifications, material certificates of analysis (CoAs), product specifications, cleaning requirements, method validations, and packaging specifications.
  • Prepare technical reports for submission to management and diligently document all laboratory and experimental activities within a lab notebook or project binder. Occasionally prepare and presents project status or technical presentations to external clients or internally for SCN BestCo's management.
  • Keep abreast on ingredients and technologies in areas of flavor, color, texture and nutrition through literature reviews; technical meetings and seminars; and through professional contacts.
  • Develop new and improved methods and systems for food processing, production, quality control, packaging, and distribution.
  • Study methods to improve quality of foods such as flavor, color, texture, nutritional value, convenience, or physical, chemical, and microbiological composition of foods.
  • Confer with process engineers, flavor experts, and packaging and marketing specialists to resolve problems and create new ideas.

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in food science, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, or related field.
  • 3 years' experience in product development or food science engineering.

  • Working knowledge of project management.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, utilize time efficiently, and multi-task in an ever changing, fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with internal staff and management. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Must be able to demonstrate practical problem solving and trouble shooting skills. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field,
  • Experience formulating and commercializing dietary supplements and/or drug products.
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software (i.e., SAP, etc.), Product Lifecyle Management (PLM) software (i.e., Workfront, Agile, etc.), and/or statical software (Minitab, Statgraphics, etc.) with the ability to interpret data.
  • Working knowledge of cGMP requirements.
  • Experience with regulatory bodies including FDA and NSF.
