Join our New Product Development team as an Industrial Designer Specialist and contribute your expertise and passion to the creation of groundbreaking products that seamlessly blend technical precision with exceptional design aesthetics.


As a Technical Engineer with a proven competency utilizing SolidWorks, a background in industrial design and manufacturing, and a propensity for creating detailed 3D drawings that can be both client facing and primed for manufacturability, you will play a crucial role in steering the development of innovative products from conceptualization to market launch. Your distinctive blend will combine a focus on technical proficiency, speed to market, utilization of UFP's manufacturing capabilities and materials, and design acumen will be instrumental in crafting state-of-the-art products. Your 3D drawing output will not only meet design aesthetics and detail at a part level, but also captivate end-users. This role serves commercial, retail, and prefabricated construction sectors.

Location:position will start out as Remote in North Carolina, with position moving into hybrid/onsite in Charlotte, NC in 2025

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Design:

  • Develop detailed technical specifications, drawings, and 3D models using SolidWorks. Experience in Composer is a plus

  • Ensure product designs meet technical and design aesthetic requirements, in addition to feasibility, relevant acceptance to industry standards (such as UL, IBC, etc.) manufacturability, and performance.

  • Prototyping and Testing:

  • Create physical or digital prototypes for concept validation and testing.

  • Collaborate with engineering and testing teams to analyze prototype performance and iterate designs accordingly.

  • Materials and Manufacturing:

  • Select suitable materials and manufacturing processes aligned with design and engineering requirements.

  • Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure cost-effective and scalable production.


Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with industrial designers, project management, sales, and other stakeholders to seamlessly integrate design and engineering elements.

  • Bridge the gap between creative design and technical implementation throughout the product development process.

  • Innovation and Trends:

  • Stay abreast of the latest industry trends, materials, and technologies.

  • Infuse innovative solutions into product designs to maintain a competitive edge.

Documentation:

  • Create comprehensive design documentation, encompassing technical drawings, animations, specifications, and design rationale.

  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and external partners to convey design intent.

Project & Self-Management:

  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure timely and cost-effective product development.

  • Provide regular updates to stakeholders on project progress.

Conceptualization and Ideation:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to generate inventive product concepts aligning with market needs and business objectives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Technical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field.

  • Proven experience in product development, emphasizing both technical engineering and design, including the assumption of design/engineering drawings for prototype fabrication.

  • Proficiency in engineering design software (e.g., CAD, SolidWorks, CS, Composer) and graphic design tools.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes and materials.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, including client-facing moments.

  • Portfolio showcasing successful product development projects.

  • Project management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of regulatory standards related to product design and development.

  • Experience with design thinking methodologies.

  • Hands-on building/construction experience.

Compensation & Benefit Information:

Salary Pay Range: pay dependent on experience
